Hey Dr. Tim Chartier and team…there’s always next year.
After suffering a crushing defeat in 2016’s March Madness final, the North Carolina Tar Heels roared back this year to outlast the Gonzaga Bulldogs 71-65 and take home this year’s NCAA basketball championship.
In the process, Play The Future’s expert partner, the much-heralded sports analytics professor, came up ever-so-short in our March Madness Prediction Tournament, finishing second overall in the all-important accuracy score.
Taking top spot, a mere five points ahead of Dr. Chartier, was Angela O., an administrative assistant from Canada, of all places! (A Canadian being the most accurate Final Four predictor? That’s like an American predicting the exact day when the ice finally thaws in the Northwest Territories!)
The two were just about neck-and-neck, but Angela’s 132 combined total points prediction were two closer to the actual 136 than Dr. Chartier’s 130. Ahh, prediction…truly a game of inches 😉
Despite the Tar Heels being slight favorites to the Las Vegas oddsmakers, PTF players–including Dr. Chartier and Angela–seemed to go with the sentimental choice, as 41.7% chose Gonzaga to win (vs. 28.6% North Carolina, 16.2% South Carolina and 13.4% Oregon). Maybe it was the canine mascot…
Well, like the Gonzaga Bull Dog, perhaps Dr. Chartier and company are licking their wounds, and setting up for a big comeback in PTF’s 2018 March Madness Prediction event.
Better still, maybe they’re getting ready for our Cha-Ching! Tax Season Tournament, starting on April 5th!

You’ll have some serious competition. Dr. Tim Chartier’s Research Team is back for more B-ball predictions! They’re joined by Ed Feng, renowned data scientist. Think you can beat ’em?
